Training and Developing for Electrical Craftsmen

The Learning Never Stops
Even experienced electricians should maintain a growing educational portfolio. The electrical industry is constantly adapting to the world we live in and ongoing education is a great way for professionals to stay ahead. Electrical Codes, safety compliances, industry trends, and electrical products and tools, are just some of the many areas where employees need the most current information.
Field employees are not the only ones who are eligible to continue learning. Other team members are able to participate in networking and industry educational opportunities to further their own career goals.
Visit our Facebook page or see the calendar below for continuing education training opportunities.
The Pathway to Becoming a Journeyman Electrician
Training to become a Journeyman Electrician traditionally is a four year process. Apprentices with Burkhead Electric have the ability to learn the components of being a skilled electrician through classroom, lab, at home, and on-the-job training environments. We utilize curriculum materials provided by NCCER, National Center for Construction Education and Research, that establishes a standardized training pathway for each student that is recognized nationwide.
Individuals with prior education, apprenticeship or working experience, are able to take a placement assessment allowing the student to begin with Burkhead where previous experience left off. All training time, classroom participation, and testing is recorded and submitted to NCCER.
Apprentices are paid employees who are able to be compensated for the hours learning the trade on the job. These hours worked are also submitted to the Department of Labor and tracked. Tasks completed fit into a number of categories to fulfill the 8,000 hour minimum requirement set by the DOL.
Completion of the NCCER program and a minimum of 8,000 logged hours fulfilling the DOL requirement allows the apprentice to sit for the State of Iowa Electrical Licensing Exam. If you're interested in joining the apprenticeship program, then you will need to complete an application of employment located on the Careers page.
Begin Your Career as an Intern
Internships are a great way for a high school or college student to get a hands on understanding of the electrical industry. Interns are able to work alongside apprentices and journeyman electricians learning the basics of the electrical trade. Interns are also introduced to NCCER curriculum that is carried forward into the apprenticeship program.
Interns are to be sponsored by a school and must complete an Intern Application. Please contact Human Resources for more information on this program.
Mentoring the Next Generation of Skilled Electricians
Burkhead Electric mentors youths in both Middle school and High school, creating interest and understanding of the electrical industry.
Students are also involved in ACE programs that allow professionals and students to learn industry basics and showcase their accomplishments at the end of the program to their parents, teachers and mentoring partners.

Students from Valley High School, Waukee High School and Dowling Catholic High School join together forming Team West to learn architechture, construction and engineering trades with the assistance of local industry mentors. Students use the knowledge learned to design, bid and plan for construction a project impacting the local community. Students must then present their projects and complete against other local ACE groups and may potentially go to the National level. Burkhead Electric brings their electrical subcontractor experience to the table to help students understand the impact our industry has on construction projects. - Spring 2020
This week is set aside to acknowledge and appreciate the thousands of apprentices both nationwide and globally who are learning their trade through registered apprenticeship programs. Apprentices are a vital piece to the growth opportunity of not just our company but to the electrical trade as a whole.
